How do I play with others? People tend to gather in courtyards and jam once in a while. By hitting your keys near someone else who’s also playing, you can hear both instruments together of course. In the early days, everyone would do their best to keep in time and harmony with others. A few still do it this way, but since Book 11 was introduced we can sync up with other people in a group and play prewritten tunes. These prewritten tunes are written in a text-based music format called ‘.abc’ and are available throughout the internet.
What is an .abc file? ABC is a text based music notation system using ASCII format. These files are generally in text form in a windows notepad file in Lotro’s case. There is a more detailed description here of how they are constructed.
How do I play an .abc file?
1. Download an .abc file, and place it in the following folder:
~ \My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\Music
A good resource for these files is at Lotro-ABC.com.*
We will have a few select files on our site as well here, with the speed already adjusted. These sound very good either alone or in a group. There is no standard for readjusting speeds, but do beware that your partners have the same speed before trying to play in sync.
*Note - A lot of these files throughout the internet may have incorrect speeds for the intended song. Change the ‘Q=___’ number within the file to adjust the speed.*Note You may want to change the name of the file to something you recognize better
2. Once the file is in the correct folder, you are ready to play it. Equip your instrument and type:
/music
3. Now you are ready to sync up with the others. Pick a sing, be sure the speed and files are the same, and type:
/play (song name)
How do I play in sync with others?
1. Download an .abc file, following the same steps above. The files will play the same whether you are sync’ed with a group of players or by yourself. Take note of the speed, or any other adjustments.
